Provenance

Gifted to the Royal Armouries by Cheshire Police, received by them as part of an amnesty.

Physical Description

Japanese sword blade, hilt, tsuba, fuchi, habaki and four seppa. Signature on the tang of the blade reads "Yamato no kami Yoshimichi" and the inner side of the tang shows the date of manufacture as "Manji san nen hachi gatsu ichi niche", or 1660. The date suggests that this swordsmith appears to be of the first generation of his school, recorded as working 1652-1688 in Settsu.
The blade is steel, the hilt wood and ray-skin (same), the tsuba iron (or ferrous alloy), the other fittings are of ferrous or copper alloy.
