Physical Description

J.R. Cooper’s system, patented in 1860 with improvements in 1861 and consisting of a breech-block raised upwards on a spring-loaded hinge at the rear to the underside of which a brass plug is connected by a link. This plug slides in a trough behind the chamber which it seals when the breech is closed. Barrel stamped with Birmingham proof marks and 30 (bore size). Backsight of Enfield pattern. Lock stamped on the inner side SIDDONS PATENT. This patent, taken out by William Siddons in 1854, consists in providing the tumbler with a projecting arm in which is formed the upper bearing for the link connecting it with the mainspring, the bearing bars of the link being shaped with an edge to reduce friction. Brass mounted stock with bar for carbine belt. The barrel is secured to the fore-end by a sliding pin and by a band at the muzzle, this and the ramrod missing.
