Notes

The chiselled vine foliage decoration of the socket may be compared with similar deoration on the socket of a small-bladed partizan (VII.192), also from Henry VIII's arsenal, and on the hafts of the maces, VIII.8, VIII.10 and VIII.79. VIII.79 was only acquired in 1969 but Lankester 2000 suggested that the other two (VIII.8, 10) may, like the staff weapons, be from Henry VIII's arsenal. The evidence for provenance of the two maces is examined in some detail.
