Old Tower Collection. Returned from loan L.186 DIDCOT March 1988 and acquisitioned.

Physical Description

The large crescent shaped blade is balanced by a square flat faced poll. The blade proper is crudely decorated with a central panel enclosed in gold inlaid lines and containing an engraved inscription in arabic. On either side is an engraved peacock and the cutting edge is bordered by engraved loops. On either side of the eye is engraved a bird attacking a dee (?). The long shaft is of polished wood with turned mouldings beneath the head.

Dimensions: The length of the blade is 237 mm, the width is 255 mm and the overall length of the axe is 982 mm. Weight: The weight of the axe is 2.155 kg.
