Physical Description

This is externally a standard Pattern 1853, 4th Model, Rifle Musket.
The standard Enfield lock is dated 1860.
The barrel retained by Baddley bands, the backsight having a rounded rear edge and graduated to 1000 yards, and the short butt. The nocksform is stamped, 5 GROOVES. 1 TURN IN 5 FEET 3 IN. PROGRESSIVE I.B and the left breech bears Enfield proof marks

Notes

This rifle and others were ordered under date of November 25th 1861, to determine which of various rifling systems were the best amongst themselves, and then in comparison with Lancaster's oval bore. The trials were carried out during 1862 and a report published in November, No.2578 of November 26th.
Five of each type of rifling was set up for the trials. This particular system did not fare well against the others.
