Percussion muzzle-loading military rifle-musket - Pattern 1853

Date

1855

Object Number

XII.3053

Provenance

Transferred from COD Weedon, 1925. (1927 list no.537). Probably item No. 82 transferred from Enfield to Tower in 1891.

Physical Description

Described as smooth bore rifle (possibly Lancaster?) with circular trigger and solid bands. Lacking trigger guard. It has the transitional type lock with swivel and mainspring retaining screw. The lock and barrel are devoid of any markings, proofmarks or otherwise. It is described in the Enfield list as a smooth-bore rifle which suggests it may be a Lancaster oval bore but measurement at the muzzle reveals no ovality. It also has an extra-wide top band
