Lock with convex lockplate engraved BARBAR, RI crowned.
Brass mounted stock; a wooden ramrod was fitted, now missing as are the sling-loops. With bayonet in the 1909 Inventory

'Lewis Barbar'
Son of James Barbar who emigrated to France with Lord Byron after English Civil War. Born in Essendun, Poitou. After religious persicution, came to London c. 1688. 'In the King's service' 1690-7.
Premises in Soho searched by Gunmakers Co., 1698 Naturalised 1700. Free of Gunmakers Co., by redemption and proof ('a very fine peice') passed 1704. Elected Assistant 1710: Master 1718. Appointed Gentleman Armourer to George I, 1717; George II, 1727. Gunmaker Portugal St, 1726-39. Rupert St, 1739-41. Contractor to Ordnance, 1723-40. d. and admin granted 1741. Recorded in ''A Dictionary of London Gunmakers 1350-1850' by Howard L. Blackmore 1986.
