Purchased at auction from Wallis and Wallis, Lewes, lot 1376. 22nd May 1959.

Physical Description

Barrel with bayonet-stop fore-sight; there is a moulding at the base of the breech forward of which are stamped London proof marks and maker's mark, a barrel maker's mark being stamped on the underside. The lock, with rounded lock plate and cock, is engraved with scrolling foliage and bears the name of the maker T. PROBIN. there is no bridle to the frizzen pivot. The upper portion of the cock is restored. Steel mounts; the finial of the buttplate is chiselled as an acanthus leaf, the screwplate being formed as a dragon with acanthus leaf tail. The front pillar of the bow of the trigger-guard is pierced for a sling loop but there is no sign of a loop having been fitted on the fore-end
