Physical Description

Cast iron head in form of a slightly tapering, squat cylinder with a top-spike. Wooden haft, slightly waisted towards the end to facilitate holding in the hand. Pierced near the head for a suspension cord (which is present).

Of the same type as VIII.130. The heads are similar to VIII.53 though the latter has spikes round the circumference. Although VIII.53 and VIII.54 are described in the IBE as French, Martin Pegler believes they may be British. He recalls having read that the Engineers were using scrap iron to cast up grenades and clubs at Bethune in 1915.
