Physical Description

Cast-iron head of barrel-shape with six spikes round its circumference and a top-spike. Head attached by screws to a wooden haft, the lower half of which tapers and ends in a turned, oblate knob.

On handle, in red paint: '1096' (an Imperial War Museum registration number).

Notes

The head is similar to VIII.54 and VIII.130 (though these latter two lack the spikes round the circumference). Although VIII.53 and VIII.54 are described in the IBE as French, Martin Pegler believes they may be British. He recalls having read that the Engineers were using scrap iron to cast up grenades and clubs at Bethune in 1915.
