Physical Description

Converted from pattern of 1856. Hilt of steel consisting of: beaked pommel slotted for the rifle bar and fitted with a lef spring cathc attached by a screw and operated by a button on the inside, the back of the pommel has been milled down, and the back of the tang milled concave; grips of black chquered leather secured wither side of the tang by four rivets; the guard a downturned quillon terminating in a disc and brushed muzzle ring with atrophied scroll terminal.
Recurved blade of yataghan form, with wide flat back and fullered on both sides.

Inscriptions and Marks

Hilt is marked on the back of the tang: A.S; C P over-stamped in larger letters J M; crown over BR/45; crown over BR/66. The blade is mrked on the outside: the Broad Arrow over WD; X; on the back: not legible; on the inside 193.
