Physical Description

Hilt: gilt brass,four bar with the inscription
'MANCEAUX PARIS'
stamped under guard. Fitted with a black grip having twisted copper wire binding.


Blade: straight with two deep fullers on each side and having a false edge extending 5 inches back from the point. The back has the inscription in script
'Manufre Royale de Chatellerault Juin 1855'.

Aries, 'Armes Blanche Militaires Francaises', 1967, illustrates a very similar weapon as a Carabinier or Cavalry Reserve Sabre and notes that the Dragoon variety has a blade length of 975 mm which corresponds with this example.
