Provenance

Found during the course of excavations in the moat of Pevensey Castle in 1932 and deposited by the Office of Works.

Physical Description

Of very large size. Hemispherical in form, the lower edge cut away in front to form a square face opening. A narrow band of latten with a dentated upper edge runs around the back and sides. Originally gilt, is stamped with a row of circles each containing a shield charged with a bend. The surface is much corroded and has rusted through in several places.

Notes

Both the date and use of this helmet are problematical. It is possibly a form of siege helmet intended to be worn over a normal headpiece with padded lining in between.
