Provenance

Purchased at auction at Holt's Auctioneers, London, on 21/03/2013 (Sale A1070, Lot 1010). Presented to Lord Mountbatten of Burma in 1948 by the Maharajah of Jodhpur, who has it manufactured to his design by his local gunsmith in Jodhpur. Passed to Lady Brabourne, daughter of Lord Mountbatten on his assassination in 1979. Lent by Lady Brabourne to the Imperial War Museum, withdrawn by Lady Brabourne for sale in 2010. Sold at auction at Holt's, 24th June 2010 (lot 999). A letter from the current Maharajah is included in the documentary support, along with other relevant papers and photographs.

Physical Description

In the form of a writing instrument, with a 2 3/4in smooth-bore barrel containing a removable propelling pencil mechanism, the outer body inscribed 'Gun Shop jodhpur, 1948', rear half of body forming a sliding breech and concealed trigger, rear mounted suspension ring/cocking piece and blued steel pocket clip, together with its original red celluloid velvet lined display case with makers label, provision for ten rounds of ammunition and a cleaning rod.
