Transferred from the Rotunda Museum of Artillery, Woolwich, 1927. From Rhodes, acquired by Sir J Lefroy 1867.

Physical Description

The couter is symmetrical and rectangular, and extending around the elbow where it is rounded with a shallow pucker. The embossing over the elbow extends to the point of the pucker at the front as an ellipsoid bulge. The cowter edges are plain, with sunken borders. At the rear edge are rivet holes for the attachment of a strap around the inside of the elbow. At the front, in the pucker, is a rivet for the attachment of the buckle for this strap. at the centre outside is vertical pair of rivets for the attachment of a slotted strap to the upper and lower cannons of the vambraces.

The cowters should also be compared to those of an armour in the Museo Stibbert, traditionally that of Giovanni della Bande Nere (Boccia 1980: 404, fig. 153).
