Physical Description

Octagonal barrel with oval-bore rifling. The upper flat bears the name of the maker I. GIRARDE A. PORRENTRY, the left side near the breech deeply stamped with the initials GS. The barrel hooks into a false breech ad is secured by slides. The breech lump bears the initials IG. Lock with convex lockplate and cock. It hooks into the stock at the front and is secured by a single lockscrew with butterfly end. Stock carved with foliage by the cheek-piece, false breech and lower ramrod pipe. Brass mounts engraved with scrollwork, the butt-plate finial also engraved with a stag and the screwplate with a dog. The trigger-guard, the bow with indented edges, is plain and may be a contemporary replacement. A wooden knob is carried on the underside of the butt which is intended to be removed and screwed into the end of the ramrod (missing) as an aid in forcing down the bullet. Hair-trigger and loops for a sling.
