Notes

Charles Compton was a friend of artists in the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, especially Millais. He showed early promise himself and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1847. He later settled for a position in the War Office. He produced a number of copies of Millais' work, such as 'the Hugenot' and 'the Order of Release'.
