Provenance

First registered 29 June 2004 following return from loan to the Australian War Memorial [museum] (reg. no. OL00378.032), being the remains of one of the Loans to the Dominions, sent out in 1921.

Physical Description

It has a two piece skull joined in a low comb and riveted on the narrow, even brim. The main edge has a plain inward turn bordered by 20 of the 21 original round headed lining rivets with square washers some of which retain gragments of the canvas lining band. At the base of the skull at either side were two rivets for the leathers for the missing cheekpieces, of which one at the ?right is missing. The exterior is painted black, with IRA in yellow chalk at the ?left. At the ?rear of the brim is a very large suspension hole, including the lcocation of the rivet that held the plates together, while at the ?front is a smaller suspension hole, broken out. another small one at the front. The skull has dents at either side near the top that look like sword cuts, and the comb is cracked through in several places.
