Provenance

Old Tower collection, probably Tower arsenal. First registered 23 June 2004 following return from loan to the Australian War Memorial [museum] (reg. no. REL/08030), being the remains of one of the Loans to the Dominions, sent out in 1921.

Physical Description

General Type Description: Brass cruciform hilt of 'Roman' form with flattened, oval-sectioned pommel, swollen ribbed grip, and quillons with disc terminals decorated with incised concentric circles. Straight, single-edged blade of wedge section, with a short ricasso, tapering slightly and terminating in a double-edged spear point.


Variations, losses, damage, etc: blade tip slightly blunted.

Inscriptions and Marks

On blade, on inside, on ricasso, stamped: crown over 19(?) (second digit incomplete) (an inspection mark).On blade, on outside, on ricasso, stamped: a crested helmet (the mark of Kirschbaum of Solingen).
