Found un-numbered in Leeds Store 3, S1, February 2004; had been there for some time previously. Probably arrived un-numbered from Tower stores about 1996. It may already have an inventory number.

Physical Description

Straight, double edged blade of flattened oval section, ending in a spear point (slightly blunted), with a short, central fuller on each face, rising 38 mm (1 1/2 in.) from the base of the blade proper and extending for 185 mm (7 1/4 in.). Imperfections in formation of the quite long tang.


Dimensions: Overall length: 1071 mm (42 1/8 in.), Blade length, less tang: 850 mm (33 7/16 in.), Blade width, at start of blade proper: 38 mm (1 1/2 in.) Weight: 480 g

Inscriptions and Marks

On blade, on both sides, stramped: J . J . Runkel . Solingen, flanked by four dots arranged in a diamond (both ends).


Places Britain


Similar blades are found on British heavy cavalry officers' dress pattern 1796 and the Highland Regiments officers' pattern 1798, but the present blade seems too broad for the former pattern and too long for the latter.
