Physical Description

This case is made from aluminium with a cupro-nickel reinforcing piece inserted from the rear. The rim is formed from the aluminium body of the case and the head is pierced by a large diameter hole. Into this insertion is fitted and which has the cap chamber and anvil moulded within it. (For the initial components see XX.4087 and for assembly details see XX.4088)

These cases were experimentally produced around 1934/1935 by Greenwood and Batley in Leeds in response to requests from the RAF for lighter ammunition for airborne use. None were entirely successful and were never adopted.
