Tower Arsenal. First registered 5 November 1999 following return from loan to the National Army Museum (Loan L200; NAM no. 7205-7-17), September 1996.

Physical Description

mameluke-type hilt. Copper alloy ('brass') hilt cast in one, consisting of a lions head pommel, slightly facetted grip, plain except where the lion's mane extends a little down the rear side; quillons with oval foliate terminals, on both sides the ecusson extends towards the blade to form a langet and extends symetrically towards the pommel to form a fictive second langet. The ecusson has a relief crown and quillons and langets each have four relief dots; all this decoration is on both sides. A chain which originally connected a ring in the lion's jaws with a hole in the forward quillon is missing.


Condition: at November 1999: generally fair to good; decoration of hilt worn, probably through cleaning; chain missing (see Description). Plain, curved, single-edged blade with a short ricasso.

The following swords in the Royal Armouries are of the same 'pattern', designated for internal purposes, Royal Armouries band type C: IX.7229-IX.7234. Another is in the National Army Museum, no. 7504-43 (B. Robson, 'Swords of the British Army...', revised [2nd] edn, London, 1996, p. 259, Pl. 226 - 'early 19th century'). All these are also missing the chain connecting the pommel and forward quillon. The hilt of IX.7425 is generally similar but is plainer and has no rings for a chain.
All the Royal Armouries examples and the National Army Museum example of this 'pattern' have engraved numbers on the backs of the blades in the same sequence:
