Physical Description

The hachi (helmet bowl) is a simple rounded bowl of iron covered with sabi-ji (russet lacquer). This is almost totally covered by a model of a fluted scallop shell moulded from wood, paper and textile and covered with dark grey, silver lacquer. Fastened near the hinge of the shell at the brow of the helmet is a carved and gilded rabbit or hare, positioned affronte, with glass eyes and upstanding removable ears in gold painted leather (the originals are missing and those currently in place are later replacements). An iron peak is attached to the front of the helmet with rivets made of shakudo (alloy of copper and gold which patinates to a purple-black colour); the rivets have a finish known as nanako, a surface embossed with tiny hemispheres making them resemble a dense flower centre, and are backed by washers with edges formed as tiny gilt petals. The peak is red lacquered underneath and covered on top with gilded leather held in place by an ornamental, chiselled gilt fukurin (applied metal rim).

Attached to the bowl is a ko manju shikoro (small, rounded neck guard) of five rows of black lacquered kozane (small scales) laced with a purple and white variegated braid. The lowest lame of the shikoro (neck guard) has its lower edge covered in the same gilded leather as the peak, decorated with outlines of dragons and leaves on a punched, textured gold ground. There are inome (heart shaped cut-out, which translates as 'boar's eye') with gilded eyelets at the outer corners of the shikoro. Almost all of the shikoro is covered with hanging strips of red and white silk that emerge from below the scallop shell and reach to just below the edge of the shikoro.

There is a helmet cord of pale blue hemp cloth.

The interior of the helmet bowl is covered with a dark blue lining of cotton or hemp, and there is a lining band of tsume-gata gawa (dark blue leather decorated abstract white triangular shapes) around the rim.
