Notes

Possibly the only known depiction of a Scottish gunpowder works in operating condition. From an earlier photograph of the painting it is clear that some small areas have been restored at some dat (by Hardie?) and that the the present frame is modern and unlike the original, which has a'Gothic' air to it. (See image supplied by Winnie Stevenson, of Roslin Glen, in letter of 8/03/2003 in object file).
