Physical Description

General Type Description: Brass cruciform hilt of 'Roman' form with flattened, oval-sectioned pommel, swollen ribbed grip, and quillons with disc terminals decorated with incised concentric circles. Straight, single-edged blade of wedge section, with a short ricasso, tapering slightly and terminating in a double-edged spear point.

Variations, losses, damage, etc: remains of lacquer on hilt; tang end stands proud.


Dimensions: Overall length: approx. 718 mm (2 1/4 in.), Blade length: 570 mm (22 7/16 in.) Weight: 995 g (2 lb 2 3/4 oz)

Inscriptions and Marks

On hilt, on outside, in centre of cross, stamped: '3' (small) over '46' (larger).On blade, on inside, on ricasso, stamped: crown over '16' (large) (an inspection mark).On other side of blade: a crested helmet (the mark of Kirschbaum of Solingen).
