Physical Description

General Type Description: Brass cruciform hilt of 'Roman' form with flattened, oval-sectioned pommel, swollen ribbed grip, and quillons with disc terminals decorated with incised concentric circles. Straight, single-edged blade of wedge section, with a short ricasso, tapering slightly and terminating in a double-edged spear point.

Variations, losses, damage, etc: lacquered overall; dent in outside of grip; some nicks to blade edges, especially forward edge where some are quite wide; blade tip blunted.


Dimensions: Overall length: approx. 713 mm (28 1/16 in.), Blade length: 567 mm (22 5/16 in.) Weight: 915 g (2 lb 0 oz)

On blade, on inside, on ricasso, stamped: crown over '22 (small, damaged stamp, sometimes read as 32 - see Notes; the crown incompletely struck) (an inspection mark).On blade, on outside, on ricasso, stamped: a crested helmet (incompletely struck so only right half is visible) (the mark of Kirschbaum of Solingen).
