Physical Description

Small square of carpenters' glass paper found inside wooden horse XVII.12 A during restoration work in November 1997. On the reverse side of the paper is written in pencil 'Repaired August 1893 by W Buckingham Carpenter D F O' or possibly 'D S O.' Buckingham is mentioned in ffoulkes's Arms And The Tower, where he is described as the Armouries Foreman. ffoulkes also describes how Buckingham died in 1915 after catching a chill whilst drilling troops in Westminster, and was buried with full honours. Buckingham's name appears on the wooden memorial tablet to Armouries staff who served in the First World War (XVIII.682). See also items donated by his descendants, XVIII.469-473.
