Probably Tower arsenal. First accessioned in Brick Tower Store, Rack 11C, 1987.

Physical Description

General Type Description: Brass cruciform hilt of 'Roman' form with flattened, oval-sectioned pommel, swollen ribbed grip, and quillons with disc terminals decorated with incised concentric circles. Straight, single-edged blade of wedge section, with a short ricasso, tapering slightly and terminating in a double-edged spear point.

Variations, losses, damage, etc: a few cut marks to pommel and quillons; tang end a little untidy; extreme blade tip broken off.


Dimensions: Overall length: approx. 716 mm (28 3/16 in.), Blade length: 571 mm (22 1/2 in.)

Inscriptions and Marks

On hilt, in centre of cross, inside, stamped: C.On blade, on inside, on ricasso, stamped: crown over 1? (small, the second digit uncertain, probably 6, i.e. it reads 16) (an inspection mark).On blade, on outside, on ricasso, stamped: a crested helmet (incompletely struck, only bottom half visible) (the mark of Kirschbaum of Solingen).
