Physical Description

General Type Description: Brass cruciform hilt of 'Roman' form with flattened, oval-sectioned pommel, swollen ribbed grip, and quillons with disc terminals decorated with incised concentric circles. Straight, single-edged blade of wedge section, with a short ricasso, tapering slightly and terminating in a double-edged spear point.

Dimensions: Overall length: 712 mm (28 1/4 in.), Blade length: 571 mm (22 1/2 in.), Blade width: 35 mm (1 3/8 in.)

Inscriptions and Marks

On hilt, on cross, on inside, stamped: 3 (small) over 25 (large).On one side of blade: crown over '22' (damaged stamp, sometimes read as 32 - see Notes).On other side of blade: a crested helmet (the mark of Kirschbaum of Solingen).
