Physical Description

For issue to Women Police Constables. Short varnished, light brown wooden truncheon of circular section. The diameter increases away from the hand before narrowing shortly before the flat tip. Towards the opposite end, there are two broad, latitudinal grooves to provide a grip, then a narrow section to anchor the wrist strap and a bulbous terminal with a flat end. A dark brown, narrow leather wrist strap passes round the narrow section of the truncheon (see above) and is secured by two white metal rivets. Condition on acquisition: Extensive losses of varnished surface, otherwise good.

Notes

This pattern of W.P.C.'s truncheom was first introduced in the 1930s and were carried until the early 1990s. The short length enabled it to fit into a shoulder bag (verbal inf. from Fred Wilkinson, June 1997).
