Physical Description

The stirrup is formed from ferrous metal. The tread is oval in shape, and pierced with a central quatrefoil. The stirrup arch widens at each side where it connects with the base, and is pierced on both sides by a quadrangular hole and decorated with engraved scrolls. The side bars are chevron fluted and terminate in two dragon heads facing outwards to either side to form the stirrup arch, with loose iron balls in their mouths. Connecting the two heads across the stirrup arch is a rectangular block, pierced for the stirrup leather, and engraved with a stylised wave pattern. The inner surface of the tread, bars and stirrup arch are all smooth, although patinated and rough from the manufacturing process.
