Purchased from the National Magazine Co. (W R Hearst collection) October 1952, with the help of the Pilgrim Trust, National Art Collections Fund and a special Exchequer Grant. This is one of 52 items purchased together. (Hearst inv. no. A.153). Purchased for Hearst by Bartel from Schedelmann, September 1936. Possibly from Reichsgrafen R. von Kaunitz collection.

Physical Description

The barrels which are octagonal at the breeches, have a matt blued finish inscribed in gold E s q u i b e l E n M a d r i d A n o d e 1727, and bear the maker’s gold stamps. Locks finely chiselled with deer and the figure of a sportsman and signed MARCUS ZELNER. Stocks with short fore-ends, carved with foliage and strapwork. Mounts of gilt brass chased with scrollwork and hunting scenes. The scutcheon plates bear the arms of Lobkowicz.
