Physical Description

General Type Description: Brass hilt comprising oval pommel on a stand and with a prominent tang-button, D-shaped knuckle-guard which spreads to form a heart-shaped stool around the blade, and very short rear quillon with drop-finial inclined towards the blade. Wire-bound grip. Single-edged, slightly curved blade, with narrow fuller towards the back extending for three-quarters of its length.

Variations, losses, damage, etc: Rear quillon removed or broken off; vice marks on pommel; hole drilled through inner shell; wire covering to grip gone, leather covering probably remains; blade slightly loose on hilt.


Dimensions: Overall length: approx. 825 mm (32 1/2 in.), Blade length, back edge by hilt to tip: 681 mm (26 13/16 in.), Blade width, at hilt: 31 mm (1.22 (approx. 1 3/16) in.) Weight: 725 g (1 lb 9 1/2 oz)

Inscriptions and Marks

On hilt, on knuckle-guard, on inside, struck(?): three tansverse lines, aparently deliberately made.On hilt, on inner shell, facing blade, punched: two dots (spaced out), apparently deliberately made.On blade, on outside, near hilt, stamped: crown over 2.On blade, on back, near hilt, stamped: REDDEL[L] & C[o] (Reddell & Co - all letters incomplete).On blade, on tang, probably stamped: T.D (TD) (visible on X-Ray - see Notes).

An X-ray of the grip area by Dr David Starley in August 2003 (Job Code: AM 1832) showed T.'D on the tang. The same or a similar mark occurs also on the tangs of IX.1352, 3587 and 6780 (see copy of report on inv. file for IX.373).
