Physical Description

General Type Description: Brass hilt comprising oval pommel on a stand and with a prominent tang-button, D-shaped knuckle-guard which spreads to form a heart-shaped stool around the blade, and very short rear quillon with drop-finial inclined towards the blade. Wire-bound grip. Single-edged, slightly curved blade, with narrow fuller towards the back extending for three-quarters of its length.

Variations, losses, damage, etc: Outer shell-guard bent towards pommel, to lie almost parallel with blade; outer shell-guard drilled at edge; hilt loose on blade; grip wire gone, leather covering may remain (difficult to tell); blade covered with aluminium paint, except for first 100 mm (cleaned to reveal marks, May 2003); a few nicks in cutting edge.


Dimensions: Overall length: approx. 852 mm (33 9/16 in.), Blade length, back edge by hilt to tip: 705 mm (27 3/4 in.), Blade width, by hilt: 31 mm (1.23 or approx. 1 1/4 in.) Weight: 770 g (1 lb 11 oz)

On pommel, on outside, engraved?: N M over D over 3.On knuckle-guard, on outside, struck(?): 6 transverse lines.On hilt, on knuckle-guard, at end by pommel, on underside, struck(?): XII.On hilt, on pommel, on rear, just above end of knuckle-guard, struck(?): two lines, one above the other (possibly part of XII (to be read vertically) where the X would be obscured by the end of the knuckle-guard (compare the same number at the end of the knuckle-guard (above) and the correspondence of number XIII in these positions on IX.3590).On outside of blade, near hilt, stamped: crown over an illegible character, possibly a number.On back of blade, near hilt, stamped: 'S.C' (i.e. initials SC this reading is definite and the letter size larger than usual for this mark).On blade, on tang, notches: XX on forward edge; XX on rear edge (visible on X-ray - see Notes).
