Physical Description

Barrels octagonal at the breech where they are stamped with the maker’s initials, H S, and decorated with small scrolls, stars and dots executed with a punch. A barrel-forger’s mark is stamped on the undersides. Locks with gilt-brass wheel-cases engraved with the arms of Saxony. Dog-head bridles of gilt brass formed as two clasped hands. The pancovers move in an arc. Slight traces of original blueing remain on the lock plates. Stocks are fluted with pear shaped butts, decorated with occasional inlays of engraved stag-horn. By the breech straps are the arms of Saxony and the monogram M N, that of the stockmaker. The junction of the butt and grip is reinforces with a gilt brass collar engraved with foliage.
