Notes

The decoration of this shield is similar to that on an armour in the bargello, FLorence, to which it may belong. Illustrated in Erbach Catalogues.

Although th small bosses have five or six rivets around their margin, only four small hjoles exist under the bosses. These are sited within the circle created by the marginal rivets and do not relate to the latter in any way. Written inside one of the small bosses (a genuine one) with a scriber are the words: 'This whole shield / was cleaned and / remounted by / R bartel/ May 1944.'
