Physical Description

Fitted with ring-necked cock, top jaw and top of screw missing. Stocked to 4 1/8 inch of the muzzle. The original browned finish partially remains. Brass furniture. Upper swivel missing. Short steel ramrod with dished cap

Inscriptions and Marks

Barrel stamped on left of breech with crowned GR over Broad Arrow and crown over crossed sceptres. Property mark in centre, arrow rubbed off. Stamped on right by pan: crown over [1]2 (i.e. crown over 12 but possibly 42), and on tang: crown over 14. Lockplate engraved with royal cypher and TOWER, and stamped with crown over Broad Arrow with, below, DR. Stamped on inside of cock: [H.S] (i.e. H.S. but could read S.H).Sideplate flat stamped: E; 16; [E] (i.e second E but uncertain, being more cursive and possibly small f or m on side; possible other marks also.Buttplate marked 83.RGT. B87. Butt stamped on right with Ordnance storekeeper's mark and 1837. Underside of butt to right of guard stamped twice with 2 and [S] (i.e. could be S or possibly a small f). Ramrod groove: front section (front to rear) stamped: 4 [4] (i.e. 4 4 the second 4 uncertain); middle section: \\\\\I/; rear section: [W] (i.e W but uncertain, could possibly be V).
