Shoulder strap

Object Number

Tower arsenal, accessioned from Lanthorn Tower, Room 3, 1989. From a cuirass captured from the French at the siege of La Rochelle in 1627 under Marshal Toiras.

Physical Description

It comprises only one scale of rectangular form and a terminal plate pierced with a keyhole slot, both attached by four rivets with square internal washers to a buff leather strap. The terminal plate, which is damaged on its upper left edge, is stepped below its lower pair of rivets to accommodate the base of the leather strap. It narrows down to rough point at which there is a rivet retaining on the inside fragments of a prehensible leather tab by means of which the keyhole slot was fitted over a stud on the breastplate. Each of the edges of the shoulder strap is bordered by a double incised line decoration. Two or more scales are missing from its upper edge, including that for the attachment to the backplate.
