Provenance

Tower arsenal, accessioned from Lanthorn Tower, Room 3, 1989. From a cuirass captured from the French at the siege of La Rochelle in 1627 under Marshal Toiras.

Physical Description

The upper part, of rectangular form, is stepped to accommodate the base of the buff leather strap, which is retained by four rivets with square internal washers. The lower part has a keyhole slot and tapers to a rough point at which there is a rivet with square internal washers retaining, on the inside, a large portion of a prehensible leather tab by means of which the keyhole slot was fitted over a stud on the breastplate. Each of the edges is bordered by a double incised line decoration. Three or more scales are missing from its upper edge, including that for the attachment to the backplate.
