Physical Description

Its skull is made in two halves joined in a low, medial comb, and at the brim with rivets. The comb is turned to the right and terminates a distance above its lower edge. The main edge has a plain inward turn bordered by nine lining-rivets, of which two at the right side and one at the left side are fitted with square internal washers retaining fragments of the connecting leathers for the missing cheek-pieces. Attached to the skull at either side, by a rivet fitted with a square internal washer, is a one-piece neck-guard embossed to simulate three lames, which flares slightly to its obtusely pointed end. Its main edge has a plain inward turn bordered by seven lining-rivets fitted with square internal washers retaining fragments of the leather lining-band. Attached to the skull, by a pivot at either side, is a slightly rounded, centrally pointed peak with a plain, inward-turned main edge. Its upward-flanged rear edge, forming the arms of the peak, is shaped to the skull and the base of the comb. Riveted to the rear of the peak proper is a triple-bar face-guard made of bars of rectangular section, welded together at the base to form a downward-projecting finial with a turned end. A small suspension-hole has been pierced at the pointed end of the neck-guard. Slightly above and to the left of this is a small rectangular hole. The upper edge of the neck-guard, bordering the skull, is slightly cracked at either side near the connecting rivet. The peak is associated, and the arm on the right side has a contemporary repair secured by two rivets. The right bar of the face-guard has become detached form the peak proper, which is broken at that point. Some minor cracks appear along the main edge of the peak. The upward-flanged rear edge of the peak is cracked at the point where it is shaped to the base of the comb.

Patinated. Painted black inside.
