Notes

The place of origin of this spear type has not yet been identified, nor is it even clear whether or not it is European. An example in the Metropolitan Museum is illustrated in G.C. Stone, 'A glossary of ... Arms and Armor', 1934, p. 122 (top ills, left) where it is (somewhat improbably?) captioned as a boar spear, 'Probably English, 16th century'. At October 1999 4 examples have been found in the collections, the present one and VII.2903 are on class VII and the other two are on class XXVI - XXVIL.154 (apparently a double number) and XXVIL.162.
