Physical Description

Composed of four lames, overlapping upwards. The lower lame is deep and the upper one narrows slightly to the centre. The lower main edge is inwardly tuned, with a sunken border containing three of it's original five externally flush lining rivets; these retain the leather lining band. The side edges have partial inward turns, and the subsidiary edges are bordered by single incised lines. The lames were articulated by rivets on the outside and by internal leathers at the centre and the inside by rivets. At the upper edge are two rivet holes, one containing c brass-capped iron rivet, for the attachment of an upper lame. The external surfaces were bright, the internal painted black.
