Helmet (chichak)

Object Number

From the collection of Dr. Richard Williams, 1974. H. S. Wellcome sale.

Physical Description

Helmet with tall conical fluted skull terminating in a short square spike that appears to be a new replacement. Around the apex and the base of the skull are bands of engraved foliage. A small, probably replacement, peak is attached by rivets at the front. The original nasal fittings have been replaced by a crude version. This helmet, once fitted with cheek-pieces and neck-guard now has a curtain of coarse mail and a thickly quilted white linen lining edged with blue, of Sudanese make attached. These changes are probably in the late 19th century, though it may have been used in the Sudan for a much longer period. The mail is riveted with European wedge shaped rivets and was probably been cut from an old European garment.

Dimensions: The height of the skull is 287 mm, the diameter of the skull is approximately 235 mm, the overall height being 520 mm. Weight: The weight of the helmet is 2.17 kg.
