Physical Description

Hollow cast iron sphere set into a round wicker work frame with a wicker strap at the base to retain the grenade and a brass covered wooden collar at the top. The sphere has a round threaded opening into which is screwed a round plate with a central hole connecting to the brass priming tube attached to the underside and two blind holes on either side for unscrewing the plate. Has a plain, flat plate and retains its priming tube.

It is not known whether this grenade was designed to be thrown by hand, the wicker basket being simply for protection during transit, or whether it was designed to be shot from a barrel in its basket. Wedged securely in its basket by the wooden collar and cannot be removed. This might suggest that it was not intended to be removed from the basket.
