Pikeman's pot

Object Number

Bowyer Tower, 1993.

Physical Description

It has a high, hemispherical skull with a narrow, integral brim, turned down at each side. It is made in two halves, joined at the skull in a low, medial comb, and at the brim with rivets. The comb, which increases in height at its apex, is turned to the right, while the brim has a plain, inward turn, accompanied by a recessed border which probably originally contained fourteen round-headed lining rivets, of which only four rivets on the right side and three rivets on the left side remain. Only the four remaining rivets on the right side retain fragments of the original square internal washers. The base of the skull was originally encircled by fourteen round-headed lining-rivets, of which the first and fourth rivets on the left side are now missing. The fourth, fifth and sixth rivets on the right side and the fifth rivet on the left side retain their original square internal washers. Attached by a pair of rivets at the nape are fragments of a decoratively shaped, iron plume holder. The cheekpieces are missing. The rear border of the brim is crudely pierced with a later suspension-hole. The border of the brim is cracked off towards the rear of the right side, and bent up and cracked towards the rear of the left side. Modern internal patches, secured by rivets, appear at the front and rear border of the brim.

Heavily patinated.
