First registered on return form loan to South African Cultural History Museum, Cape Town, South Africa, Loan No.L184, on 16/07/1991 (borrower's loan no: sword - l65/862; scabbard (returned on sword IX.3694, to which it does not belong) - L89/8(part)).

Physical Description

Variations, losses, damage, etc: Inside of grip frayed at end towards blade. Bad nick in forward edge of blade, near tip. Scabbard painted 'silver', and 'gold' round inside of mouthpiece.

Inscriptions and Marks

On hilt:10On outside of knuckle-guard, stamped: '5 / D G / 566 / 33', the 33 overstruck: '00'.10On outside of stool, near junction with knuckle-guard, stamped: '7' and '8', the 8 overstruck '9'.10On the stool to the outside of the blade, stamped: a heart, and 'MOLE'.On blade:10On the back, stamped: 'MOLE', and 'B' struck through with a horizontal line.10On the forward edge, by the hilt, stamped: an arrow over 'B' over '13'.10On the inside of the blade, near the hilt, stamped: crown over 'B' over '13'.On scabbard:10No visible marks, but may be hidden by paint.
