Old Tower stock sent on loan 184 to S.Africa in 1920 and returned to Armouries on 15/7/91.

Physical Description

Of one piece, it is roughly hemispherical in form, with a slightly flattened top. It has been subsequently cut with a pair of crude vertical slits at the sides at the front and with an additional pair at each side, each of which has cropped corners at the lower edge. Bordering the lower edge are thirty lining holes above which, at the front, is a transverse rectangular slot. Between and level with the tops of the slits at the right rear is a circular hole possibly for securing the upturned brim of the hat.

It is painted black overall, some of which has worn away inside in a circle around the edge of the crown.

Inscriptions and Marks

Inside the crown is painted in yellow paint: L65/889. On the inside above the tops of the right front and rear slots is painted in white paint : 3724 with a line of bright yellow paint through the first three figures.
