Old Tower stock, sent on loan 184 to S.Africa in 1920 and returned to Armouries on 15/7/91.

Physical Description

Of one piece, it is roughly hemispherical in form, with a slightly flattened top. It has been subsequently cut with a pair of crude vertical slits at the sides at the front and with an additional pair at each side. Bordering the lower edge are thirty one lining holes, three of which are cut through by an adjacent slit. A transverse rectangular slot is pierced at the brow above the foremost lining holes. Between and level with the tops of the slits at the right rear is a circular hole possibly for securing the upturned brim of the hat.
It is painted black overall.

Inscriptions and Marks

Inside the crown is painted in yellow paint: L65/800. On the inside above the rim between the right front and rear slots is painted: 3724 with a line of bright paint through the 7. There are two small splashes of paint below the circular hole.
