Physical Description

Quadrangular spike, with annular and baluster moulding at the base, which passes through a collar and screws into the haft. The collar supports a crescent-shaped axe blade with cusped upper and lower edges and pierced decoration and a fluke, inclined towards the haft, with similar decoration. Flattened ovoid neck supported on tapered socket of circular section with two annular bands and two langets of slightly different lengths attached to the haft by three rivets. Varnished wooden haft of circular section with straight end and no shoe.


Condition: at July 2001: lower edge of horn of axe blade and tip of rear fluke are slightly bent out of true.
