Physical Description

It has a deep cut-out at the neck, shallow arm-openings and a medial ridge terminating just above the inward-angled waist, which has a flange that deepens towards its centre. The neck-opening is outward flanged. The arm-openings, the sides and the waist-flange have plain, inward-turns. The edges were originally bordered by thirty four large brass rivets of which the two at each shoulder were of flat-headed form, and the remainder are of high round-headed form with cicular, internal washers. The washers retain fragments of the leather lining. the center rivet has been replaced. At the lower corners on either side are two small iron rivets possibly of a later date. The inner rivet at each shoulder is now missing. Two rivets along each arm are missing. At either side of the chest is riveted an asymmetrical mushroom-shaped brass stud, to engage the shoulder-straps of the backplate. Bright with slight pitting.

Inscriptions and Marks

Stamped 'ZUDERELL' on the outside of the right shoulder. Struck with a group of five dots and a further group of three dots insde the edge of the right side. These dots are possibly serial marks.
